Barrett Larson – This dark alley signifies the dark, dreary life of a man who is not ready for the outside world. He has left his home for the troubles of the world, not knowing what he was getting into. He is regretting his decision.

Pat Larsen – My painting attempts to contrast the complacent son, who is tending to business and the exuberance of the father who has approached the returning son. The father is depicted in silhouette high in a field. The other son is depicted as he lovingly attends his flock. I have tried to heighten the emphasis of a caring son through the directional gaze of the animals as they watch their master who is attending a young sheep.

Welcome Home

Patricia Langewis – I was inspired by the idea of mending a broken relationship. I used torn paper, a band-aid, and a photo to represent a homecoming. “Welcome Home” is festive and bright and filled with confetti. “…Let us celebrate with a feast,” said the father on the return of his son and then the celebration began.
The Return

Patricia Langewis – I was inspired by the ability of a loving father to forgive his son and bring him home. “The Forgiveness of the Father” shows an emotional reunion. “He ran out to meet him, threw his arms around his neck and kissed him.” One day we all hope to return home to a merciful Father.
Far From Home

Melody Kroger – I was inspired by the story of the prodigal son and how it still relates to people’s lives both physically and spiritually. All of us have run away and been far from home in a sense, and it’s just a great reminder that no matter how far we run, God is always there to welcome us back with open arms.

Joanne Kunath – A righteous man only wanted the best for his sons. He allowed each one to choose his path. His youngest made a prideful choice, leading him into the darkness of sin. Instead of fulfillment, he was faced with shame, hunger, and lonliness. Our sons have made wrong decisions that led them into the emptiness of the world. Our daily prayers are for them to return to the path where unconditional love is abundant. Our Father offers love and forgiveness to all who will climb up out of the darkness; where the light of acceptance is found. The prodigal son returned home where fulfilling love was given without question. (Luke15:20-24)
The Son

Hutch Landfair – The prodigal son made himself an outcast from his father’s house because he was ashamed of the sin that he had commited. I wanted to to create a portrait of an outcast who fled by his own will. The prodigal son stayed away from his father’s house even though his father would have taken him back at any time. Sometimes we hide from God because we, like the prodigal son, are ashamed of how sinful we are, and how holy the Father is. We should remember that we are only an outcast by our own will, and that God will take us back at any time.

Diana Lancaster – “Evening Chores” was inspired by the dutiful son who devoted his life to serving his father. Laboring alongside him, this son did not stray from the moral path and learned the work of a respectable man.

Karen Laing – This is the “moment of realization” for this young man. The animals were the only beings present when he made a decision to “do something different” and go home. Animals are wonderful creatures and I believe, can sense our emotional states. When I reread Luke 15, it stood out to me that the prodigal son came to a turning point and made a decision to get up and go home. In my artistic version, I believe the pigs were as angels who prompted him to make a decision to change his fate. Even the vulture and the goat are there as stark reminders of the consequences of listening to and following self-will. So he must decide. Stay and die, or go home to the Father and live.
Angel

Joanne Kunath – Our Father has provided angels to walk among us and give us His messages and guidance when we take the wrong turn. Many times in my life, God provided guidance through difficult trials. Since my heart was given to Jesus, I have felt protected. I have an angel who guides me away from the sins of the world. I was lost and then found by my loving Shepherd. For there is no greater joy in heaven than when the lost sheep changes his heart and life. (Luke 15:6-7)

Paula Kalina – We are all sinners. Jesus teaches that heaven rejoices over even one repentant sinner. His teaching fills us with the hope that one day, we too, can share in that joy with the angels in heaven.
