Ben Riley – The glass apple represents the temptation that the prodigal son gave in to when he took his inheritance and left his family. The coiled metal inside the apple represents the chaos that the prodigal son dealt with because of his sin. The bronze trunk of the tree represents the father’s forgiveness when his son finally repents and returns and also his steadfast love for his son in spite of his sin.

Charlotte Bailey Rierson – The prodigal son left “home” and took with him his inheritance. He became an outcast and lived a wasteful life, squandering all he had. Becoming a derelict, he lived less than the life of his Father’s servants. He was a broken man in spirit, mind, and soul. He decided to take “The Journey Home.” Some of us have never strayed from home. Perhaps we have taken for granted having the Lord always with us. Let us count our blessings and help those who want to come “Home.” The Lord, Our Father, loves us unconditionally. For the ones who take “The Journey Home,” let us join in the celebration.

Charlotte Bailey Rierson – In the dreams of our youth, we may know a prodigal son who is more adventuresome in his walk through the darkness of the night. He recklessly squandered his inheritance and turned his back on the Lord’s blessings. He has been lonely, sad, and hungry for the lost comfort of his Father. He has feelings like no other. He has walked the furthest from the “light” and has fallen into the dark hole. The Lord, our Father, heard his cry of despair and hopelessness. He forgives foolish ways and awaits with open arms if we want to come home, say good-bye to the dark hole, and hear the uninterrupted cry of the Lord, “Come home, my son, into the light.”

Jenell Richards – In this painting I wanted to protray the prodigal’s emotions. He had experienced living in excess, feeling desertion when his funds ran out, and finally in humbleness, he knew he must go home.

Jenell Richards – Bleakness, darkness, starvation for his soul as well as his body. He had reached the depth of desperation…

Marion Rice – We all get tempted, become deceived, make wrong choices, and stubbornly choose our own way at times. Some of those choices have lasting consequences and can be disastrous. God often uses the love, wisdom and courage of our brothers and sisters in Christ to seek us out and bring us back to the fold.

Patti Goss Retzloff – God’s love restores the fallen leaf from the tree, returns the lost sheep to the fold, and brings home the prodigal. In this painting, the dark tree is the son’s mood as he leaves his home and the spiritless life that follows. The uplifting branches are the father’s prayers for the son. The colors speak of the cloak the father throws around his son in the joy of homecoming.

Holly Reding – Throughout history, since the exile from the garden, the noise of mankind has filled the earth. The noise of our flesh echoes through the lands and gives evidence of the fall. Our search for freedom and independence, apart from our Father, will eventually find us lonely, destitute, broken, and destructive. The son is seduced by the noise of the world, thinking that the world has more to offer than the life he has lived. He is sure that he would be a better steward of his posessions than his father had been. He is lured away from the protection and grace of a loving father. He eventually finds himself caught in an unsatisfying world.

Aaron Rath – As I read the story of the prodigal, I could relate to the son’s feelings once he decided he wanted to go home. My father served in Iraq and Afganistain for over three years off and on. At times, he was too far away from me (and I from him). I know the pain of a father and son being apart.

Deborah Poe – With age comes many collections of emotions; some are not good for the human heart. As the elder brother observes his father’s acceptance of his returning brother, he feels the enormous dark feelings which build a resentful heart. We are all the elder son at some point in our lives. We feel this inner darkness of the human heart. Resentment cannot co-exist with forgiveness; the gratitude for life is a gift.

Deborah Poe – PRIDE, REBELLIOUSNESS, STUBBORNNESS, IMMATURITY, etc.
The younger son went through many emotions before he reached the point where he could release his youthful fantasies. In a state of solitude, he became aware that what he needed was what he dared not dream. He never dreamed his father could pour absolute forgiveness over him as he welcomed him back home. He was elated by this discovery! We are all the youthful son at some point in our lives.
A Sinner Celebrated

Alexa Pearce – My inspiration came directly from the seventh verse in Luke 15. I felt like it was a common theme between all three stories, and what Jesus said here hit me the most out of the whole chapter, “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” I depicted a abstract version of what Jesus said. To me, the deep red and black are what I think of when I think of sin; however, the form that the red takes is somewhat unexpected as a huge, billowing, and celebratory ribbon. In this way, I showed how sinners who have repented are celebrated by the Lord.

Suzanne Parker – The father has forgiven all the son has done and is so moved with love and compassion that he runs to him “while he was still a long way off.” The road home is long and winding, leaving temptations, guilt, and sin behind. It’s colored red for the blood of Christ that makes the path home possible and ultimately ends in overwhelming love and rejoicing.
