Alicia Small – I attended the Artist Demo Day, and from watching artists such as Mr. Barry Thomas, was influenced to paint a part of the story from Luke 15. (This is the first time I’ve ever created a painting.)

Terry Simpson – -To illustrate the story of the Prodigal Son which correlates with our spiritual journey, I threw 3 plates on the wheel. While the work is called Journey, each plate has a name as part of the whole piece.

Sara Simpson – As I was reading the story of the prodigal son, certain words in the story stood out to me. These words alone tell the story of the prodigal son. The top corner is dark, because the words in this area are telling of the son’s period of darkness. The words at the bottom are after he had seen the light, had returned home, and enjoyed a time of celebration. Since I think the main idea of the story is compassion, I have the words filled with compassion larger and near the center of the painting.

The Robe

Dixie Shelton – The story of the prodigal son is a moving one. It teaches repentance of sins and the compassion and forgiveness of the father. When the son returns, as from the dead, he is greeted by the father who orders the servant to bring forth the best robe and put it on the long lost son. I can empathize with that father, for I, as a parent, would also warmly welcome a lost son’s return. When I started contemplating the story, I thought about the many gifts the father presented his son and this painting materialized as a representation of the best robe.

Jillian Sharp – In the parable of the lost son, there is a moment of time where the son realizes he is in the wrong and wants to go home. This painting illustrates that moment of time when he is in repentance. In life, we all mess up, but we must repent to God and return to Him, seeking Him as our refuge. This picture is dear to my heart and shows an important time in our relationship with Christ.

Nothing to Lose

Cathy Shaneyfelt – This piece was inspired by the parable of the lost son. Powerful insight by Henri J.M. Nouwen in The Return of the Prodigal Son, inspired me to consider how the story relates to my own experience of life with God. Using hand colored papers, rubber stamps, acrylic paints, and a found object, my art is intended to convey the purity of divine love. The father’s love is equal for both sons who are far away from him for different reasons. As we learn to love like the Father, we realize that we are neither more nor less, for the cross is the great equalizer.

An Invitation to Joy

Art Medium: Altered Object Art/Mixed Media

Art Dimensions: .

Art Price: $NFS

Cathy Shaneyfelt – My artwork was inspired by the homecoming celebration in the parable of the prodigal son and the book The Return of the Prodigal Son, A Story of Homecoming by Henri J. M. Nouwen. The object altered is an old window, once lost, now found like the son who came home. Using rubber stamps, stickers, ribbons and hand-colored papers, the window is decorated with modern-day whimsy as an invitation to join the party at the Father’s house. All the elements of a celebration are depicted to convey how spectacular the love of the Father is for the son. It is meant for interactive use in that the invitation wording can be removed and replaced for different special occasions.

Stop Running

Lilly Seay – After I read the story of the prodigal, I thought of the simple things that have the power to turn a person around and change to the the right direction. I envisioned a stop sign with the word running written underneath it and a one way sign illustrating there is only one way to God.

Returning to My Lord

Art Medium: Watercolor

Cynthia Schanink – My painting is a story about returning to the Lord in a robe of red, the blood of the lamb sacrificed for my sins. I see a black cloud coming with a gold lining and know He is watching and hoping I come running back over and over as often as I should. I know Jesus is my Savior and I will always want to be doing God’s will.

Cynthia Schanink – We have all, at some point, lived the reckless life of a prodigal, only to come back home to live a good life in Jesus’ loving arms and to be embraced by God.

Nicole Sample – The purpose of the work is to express the anguish and pain that results from a person’s regretful decisions in life. The prodigal son selfishly saw “more” for his life in the worldly things. He began to engage in riotous living but “when he came to himself” (Luke 15:17), he went back to his father to ask for forgiveness. Each of us has a moment where we get carried away with the things of this world. God brings us back to Him in some way, shape or form. This work shows that moment.

My Son Was Dead and Is Alive Again

Pamela Rogers – God birthed “Sons” into the earth by breathing His life into Adam. God gave them the earth except for one tree. Man lost God’s life within his spirit and the earth to Satan when he disobeyed God. The prodigal son repented says, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and you, I am no longer worthy to be called ‘your son.’” With joy his father restored him as a “son” saying, “MY SON WAS DEAD AND IS ALIVE AGAIN.” Jesus, God’s Son, came to take our sin so that we might have God’s life reborn in us, making us “GOD’S SONS ALIVE AGAIN”!

Jo Wood Rogers – Having spent his inheritance on a sinful life, the wayward son makes a long, torturous detour-filled journey home. He presnts himself to his father for forgiveness, having realized his sinful actions had separated him and his father from a loving, caring relationship.
