When I think of seasonal or ecclesiastical artwork, Mary and baby Jesus have always struck me. Besides the fact that the Incarnation is the “reason for the season”, the love and innocence captured between Mary and Jesus is beautiful, a picture of a mother and her child but also a sinner holding the future Savior. To me, Mary holding baby Jesus encapsulates the purest center of Christmas.

I chose to paint a forest with a winding road. The road symbolizes our walk with God during our lifetime. At the end of the road is light, which is Jesus. Matthew 7:13-14 was my inspiration. This verse talks about how our path to life is narrow and very few find it. This is a powerful verse. My painting portrays this verse.

Behind every story, behind every life is brokenness. Jesus Christ came to the world to shine His light on the darkness of the world. The cracked tile is the representative of the broken and shattered background behind everything. Jesus’ light is shining on the man praying on his knees. Jesus’ light holds everything together and unifies it. Many times it is easiest to see Christ when we are down and on our knees, going through hardships. He is always there.

I chose to illustrate the joy that Mary felt when she first held Jesus. I took a classical depiction of Madonna and Child and put a modern spin on it. The baby, Jesus, symbolizes the light and hope brought to the world. Mary’s embrace of Jesus is not only a motherly and loving embrace, but an embrace that symbolizes the light we as Christians should cling tight to.

The winter night when Jesus was born in my imagination was a peaceful winter night. There is not a cloud in the sky. Everyone can see the star letting them know Jesus Christ is born. I’ve heard a person compare the place Jesus was born to the inside of a cave, so the perspective is looking out of a cave in the night.

My earliest knowledge of Him was as a Babe in a Manger at Christmastime displayed under our tree reminding me it was our most special Gift from God. The beautiful colors we see around us would not be possible to view without light. In my painting, the colors of the spectrum are represented in each corner. In the center is the Christ Child, surrounded by pure white. This white light depicts purity, protection and Divinity. Fortunately, the beautiful Light of Christ shines on us all.

To each of us, different talents or gifts are given. We can choose to let them lay dormant in darkness or be used as a light to lead others to God. If talents are used correctly in the way they were intended, the purest pleasures are found-both from the giver and the receiver. In my painting, it is the close of the day. As light begins to fade and darkness creeps in, the musician is moved with God’s Spirit. Through music, the Spirit flows like a river from his soul and back to heaven. As others hear his gospel of music, lights in the city come on with the dawning of knowledge. God’s gift is being shared with others thus glorifying the Savior.
