As an artist, a lot of times I get caught up in creating a perfect image or have stipulations. I wanted this piece to reflect how Christ is a cornerstone, no matter the humanity we’re all familiar with. Not forgetting we’re told plainly to come as we are, I set aside techniques I have learned and picked up through schooling and elsewhere to create a very raw, primitive collage of negative ideas with Jesus as the redemptive focal point. We are all raw and broken and familiar with the topics discussed in this painting. Christ is our hope and foundation in an unstable, corrupted world; our refuge and salvation.

Greetings, Favored One!

Luke 1:28, “Greetings, Favored One!” or “Thou art highly favored, the Lord is with thee. (KJV)” may be my favorite part of the whole Christmas Story. Goodness reigns at that moment. Mary does what is right and proceeds to give us one of the most beautiful prayers. Joseph, Elizabeth, Zechariah, everyone gets to be an instrument in The Lord’s will. I love how goodness takes over; it is such a powerful reminder as we wait for it to happen again.

Out of the Darkness

JESUS LOVES ME THIS I KNOW “You called me out of the darkness into Your wonderful light”. 1 Peter 2:9 We don’t have to be afraid of the dark anymore! Because of Christ we’re no longer doomed to wander lost in a forest of shadows and fear; His birth is the lighted sky that beckons the way out. Silhouetted children run to it through the dark woods from which the tree for Christ’s cross will come. Representing the new creatures we can become because of Jesus, two birds soar from the darkness into the wonderful light. In reverse silhouette are Forget-Me-Nots, reminding me Christ’s birth is only half the story of why I am no longer condemned to an eternity of darkness.

Color is the presence of Light. Alizarin crimson, cerulean blue, cobalt violet and viridian green…these are the colors of the artist’s palette. As light illuminates color on the canvass it brings life to worship in this chapel. The brightest light is the pure white light in the window that represents the presence of the Holy Spirit.

After reading the verses this is the image that came to mind. It really just was taken from the thought that we carry the tools to be guided through life. Jesus will be with you to help and guide you like a candle in the dark.

My drawing represents my struggle I’ve had with the world and the freedom that the Lord brings. In this picture, it shows myself encased in ice which represents the world, while the light, representing God, is melting away all the pressure, lies, heartache, and pain that the world brings. I am set free by God and His all-powerful and over-coming light.

Sharing the Light

Award: Top Ten

Division:Scholar

Art Price: $175

I interpreted “Jesus the Light” differently than most because I wanted it to be unique. It’s titled ‘Sharing the Light’ because it shows Jesus lending us His light and a Christian sharing that light with a non-believer. God placed a picture similar to this in my heart and said, “Start painting!” I spent more time praying about it than painting, asking Him to guide my hands and create something to inspire His people. I actually stumbled onto the verse after conceiving the picture, but isn’t it perfect? I’m thrilled to share with you the picture God placed in my heart. One last thing, thank You God for everything! I literally couldn’t have done it without You!

He is the Light

I was inspired by John 8:12. When Jesus spoke again to the people He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

His Light

When I heard the phrase “Jesus the Light,” I immediately though of our source of light, the sun. Humans are naturally dependent on the sun as we are on Jesus’ light, and as the moon eclipses the sun, so our sin eclipses the SON. The words on this painting are from the song “World on Fire” by Trading Yesterday. They work well with this piece because despite the shadow night casts on the sun, we know it will be morning, and as distractions cast a shadow on Jesus’ light, we can be confident that we will see it again.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me; your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. Psalm 139:9-12
