Based on John 1 and John 8:12, this piece depicts Christ in His dual roles as both man and God. On the right side we see the man Jesus, illuminated by the early morning sun. A crown of thorns shows the rejection and shame He bears. In contrast, the left side, in shadow, reveals Christ’s true nature, that of the Eternal God. He came to His own and His own received Him not.

This represents the path a believer takes from dying to oneself through Christ’s death on the cross to literally resurrecting with Him to a new life. In Romans 6:4, Paul explains “…we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we should walk in newness of life.” This is the miracle Jesus told Nicodemus of in John 3:3, “Except a man be born again, He cannot see the kingdom of God.”, and 3: 6, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” Everyone who sees this is born of the flesh, but I hope each one would ask “Have I been born in the Spirit?”

(Jeremiah 13:16) Intentionally somewhat ominous, this painting, “The Disappearing Light,” speaks metaphorically and possibly prophetically of God removing the Light from a nation that is systematically crowding Jesus (the Light) out of its private and public life. The sunset represents the last vestige of light before darkness fills the void. When the light withdraws darkness prevails. The dark clouds are metaphors for forces which attempt to obscure the Light. The stone bluffs in the dark foreground represent the precarious nature of man’s walk without the light (Jesus) illuminating the way.

Bible verses:
Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”
Proverbs 4:18 “The path of righteousness is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.”
Inspiration: Our pathway is Jesus the Light. Jesus is shown as bright to represent not only Jesus but light. The people on the pathway are darker with less detail, as they represent us as an unfinished product of the path. Jesus is the Light. Jesus is carved from Basswood which is painted with lighter colors. The other figures are carved from Butternut and stained with acrylics. Carving No: 1673
