Based on John 1 and John 8:12, this piece depicts Christ in His dual roles as both man and God. On the right side we see the man Jesus, illuminated by the early morning sun. A crown of thorns shows the rejection and shame He bears. In contrast, the left side, in shadow, reveals Christ’s true nature, that of the Eternal God. He came to His own and His own received Him not.

This represents the path a believer takes from dying to oneself through Christ’s death on the cross to literally resurrecting with Him to a new life. In Romans 6:4, Paul explains “…we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we should walk in newness of life.” This is the miracle Jesus told Nicodemus of in John 3:3, “Except a man be born again, He cannot see the kingdom of God.”, and 3: 6, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” Everyone who sees this is born of the flesh, but I hope each one would ask “Have I been born in the Spirit?”

The Disappearing Light

(Jeremiah 13:16) Intentionally somewhat ominous, this painting, “The Disappearing Light,” speaks metaphorically and possibly prophetically of God removing the Light from a nation that is systematically crowding Jesus (the Light) out of its private and public life. The sunset represents the last vestige of light before darkness fills the void. When the light withdraws darkness prevails. The dark clouds are metaphors for forces which attempt to obscure the Light. The stone bluffs in the dark foreground represent the precarious nature of man’s walk without the light (Jesus) illuminating the way.

Bible verses:
Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”
Proverbs 4:18 “The path of righteousness is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.”
Inspiration: Our pathway is Jesus the Light. Jesus is shown as bright to represent not only Jesus but light. The people on the pathway are darker with less detail, as they represent us as an unfinished product of the path. Jesus is the Light. Jesus is carved from Basswood which is painted with lighter colors. The other figures are carved from Butternut and stained with acrylics. Carving No: 1673

The Light of Life
1. Jesus Christ as “The Light of Creation”. The presents the feeling of formlessness, the metallic darkness, and the beginning of order with the introduction of light at creation.
2. Christ as the “Light Of The World”. It depicts the haunting darkness of man’s sinful condition because of the fall. Jesus Christ, the creator of light, breaking into the darkness of sin as the redemptive Light.
3. Christ in His glory as the “Light Of Paradise”
It shows that the apex of history is more magnificent than the creation. The light of Christ’s glory has driven out all darkness.
Restoration

Jesus Christ, as the Light of the World, replaces the darkness of sin with redemption, restoration, and hope in each person who submits the brokenness of his life to God. The construction of this mosaic cross represents that miraculous work. The broken materials used to design this cross represent believers in Jesus Christ as the sinful, scarred, and broken vessels that we are. When we have been restored by God, however, that brokenness results in a beautiful and unique design. (Custom framed exemplification of the piece is included as part of the art.)
Dayspring

The inspiration for this painting came from Zachariah’s song in Luke 1:78-79: “Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (KJV) This is a painting of a sunrise viewed from my front yard. The stillness of the morning inspires me to meditate on the awesome beauty of the One who came to give us light.

This is a painting about two flames. More than that though I see a narrative relationship between the larger and smaller flame much like my relationship with my Father. Ever changing, ever growing-finding more and more illumination when I search and question.
