Second Chances
Art Medium: Acrylic

Virginia Mills – God is a God of Second Chances. God’s wrath over Nineveh for its sinful ways and Jonah for failing to go and warn the people of Nineveh is demonstrated by the angry skies in the upper left-hand corner of the painting. But then we see the sunshine of His love and mercy shown when Jonah prayed to God and repented, agreeing again to go to Nineveh. God also gives the city of Nineveh (demonstrated by the large extravagant buildings) a Second Chance when the people repented and vowed to serve only Him. God is truly a God of Second Chances.

Arlette Miller – In the belly of the fish, Jonah repented of his disobedience. Yet after preaching to Nineveh, Jonah climbed the mountain to watch God destroy Nineveh. How like Jonah we are. We tell God how to operate when God has a far better plan for us and the others for whom we pray.
The Great Fish

Amy Miller – I have tried to portray the entire story in one picture. The darkness of the story itself, the great fish, and the fear felt by Jonah and the ship’s crew. (There is also a map of the area hidden in the background.)
Jonah and the Omnipresent God

Betty Russell McMath – God is always omnipresent. When Jonah disobeyed the Lord’s order, he was cast into the sea. The Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah which lasted three days and nights as punishment. Jonah came to his senses in God’s omnipresence and vowed unto the Lord with thanksgiving. The Lord then spoke to the fish and the fish vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

Carla McGoldrick – I tried to replicate the image in my mind of the moment Jonah was taken into the darkness of the water by the fish.
Jonah Rose Up to Flee

Matthew McCulloch – I decided to illustrate the impossibility of Jonah escaping God’s will. I painted both the tree and the figure as shadows, contrasting the sunset, to create a sense of forebodingness-of God’s wrath. A rope is tied to the tree and the figure’s leg, symbolizing Jonah’s ultimate futility in fleeing. The Hebrew text on the tree, which represents God, means “Yahweh.” “Jonah rose up to flee,” but God’s “rope” pulled him back (Jonah 1:3).
Jonah’s Storm, God’s Mercy

Patricia McCarroll – The storm is raging as Jonah flees. Perhaps the greater storm is an internal one as he defies God’s command to take His message of repentance to the hated Assyrians. But God’s presence and plan to use Jonah cannot be so easily ignored. He penetrates the storm and Nineveh is still in Jonah’s future as God miraculously intervenes.

Catie McAlister – My drawing is an image of the whale and the tormented life quality is symbolic of Jonah’s decision to run away from God’s will. The dove with the olive branch is the Holy Spirit coming to show Jonah the way to God.

Sara Lunsford – The path is in front of us, our instructions are clear on how to get to the finish line, yet so often we deliberately turn in the wrong direction if we see significant hurdles ahead. Call it human nature, spiritual immaturity, or deliberate rebellion, Jonah learned his lesson the hard way. Choosing a direction away from God’s will leads nowhere.

Maria Liebeck – God’s biblical reputation takes people places they never wanted to go. “Witness Jonah delivered by whale to Ninevah.”1
In my reflection, Jesus compared Himself to Jonah entombed for three days in passion and death.
God shows His love in the resurrection of Jesus, a new life for Jonah, and hope for us. Here, Jonah, crowned by seaweed and imprisoned in flesh, is also Jesus reaching out to God in trust and obedience. The cry is universal; we are all awaiting a new reality. 1John Shea. “A Prayer of Wholehearted Commitment”

Barrett Larson – The glimmering city of Nineveh depicts God’s choice as a mission zone for Jonah. The gold represents the rich possessions and the materialism. The storm represents evil blowing from the city, and the sunset represents a new future for the City of Nineveh.
