Jonah

Nancy Parker – My piece is a visual narrative of the book of Jonah: Jonah’s personal journey, God’s love for him, and Jonah’s ultimate lesson of God’s compassion and forgiveness for His people. I felt like, as I researched the story and the historical background, I entered the story and journeyed with Jonah. This piece is the result of our journey.

Why Jonah

Art Medium: Acrylic

The whale (fish) part of the story is very dramatic. I wanted to create a multi-faceted visual composition that relays desperate emotions of the moment, God’s sometimes inscrutable agenda, and the crypto-zoological aspect of the tale. I used the reflections on the surface as the image of God’s influence; gold high lights indicate a relationship between God and the fish. Jonah’s expression relates the work’s title, reaching upward with a questioning gesture.

Jonah’s Salvation

Gary Owen – My inspiration is a thought that ran through my mind. That thought being that God does not wish for anyone to be lost when we disobey. He has provided for us a way to return to Him. I painted this scene to depict Jonah’s realization of his disobedience showing his cry for help. God, in His love for Jonah, chooses to use a big fish for Jonah’s salvation.

GBaby Ngoundjo – I built the fish to represent Jonah’s three days in the belly of the fish. Jonah’s presence in the fish is a punishment for him and for all of us, refusing to spread the Word of God and trying to escape.

Life Lessons

Art Medium: Mixed Media Acrylic

Sandra Newberg – My inspiration for this piece was based on “growing up.” At one time or another, like Jonah, we also have questioned God’s decisions and thought we knew what was best. Love, hope, responsibility, trust, mercy, and forgiveness are some of the life lessons taught in Jonah.

God’s Grace

Art Medium: Mixed Media Acrylic

Art Dimensions: .

Art Price: $NFS

Sandra Newberg – My inspiration for this piece is based on our sometimes “holier than thou” attitude. We listen and follow but get angry when God doesn’t do what we want Him to do. Being grasped by God’s grace means learning to show mercy, love, and forgiveness and remembering to
let God be God.

In My Distress I Called upon the Lord

Art Medium: Acrylic Paint

Alisha Neblett – When thinking about the Jonah Art Festival, I thought of Jonah 2:2 that speaks both of Jonah’s distress and God’s presence in his life. When I am at my most distressed, the more I feel God’s presence comforting me. The girl in the painting may be distressed, the world around her depressing, yet the chair, like God, is offering her comfort and support so she can eventually follow Him once again.

The Eye of God Watching over Jonah

Art Medium: Alabaster & Soapstone

Bryan Massey, Sr – Jonah considered his disobedience to God and prays and asked for forgiveness as he repents for his disobedience. — My inspiration for all of my work comes from the Lord. God has been the most inspiring aspect of my life and for my career. Throughout my career, the good times and the lean times, He has always taken care of me and my family. I truly believe the scripture in the book of Psalms that “the steps of a righteous man are ordered by the Lord.”

Laura Murray – I once believed that it was my calling only to sing. My grandfather always told me that you cannot know your own life plan, but when you are called, you will know. My life has been difficult and beautiful and I am grateful. When I accepted that I could share my experiences through visual art, the world opened up to me and I became what I was meant to be. I can help, heal, change, sing and share by being an artist. I am inspired by the human spirit, ingenuity, drive, and determination. This painting came from sketches about a time when I was lonely and hurt and needed loving kindness. The work is the culmination of coming to terms with my father and my feelings about God.

Leslie Murillo-RodriQuez – Once God has put us on our paths, we are sometimes unwilling to proceed with our journey or duty as a Christian as was Jonah as he reached Nineveh. Resting in his own dilemma under his precious tree, so is life. Sometimes the Lord pushes us onward as though those things we love are at the most being taken away and as we do at times with our own children to assist them on making the right and just decisions by guiding them through what some call “Tough Love.”

Under the Sea

Gerri Much – When thinking about Jonah being thrown overboard into the sea, I felt what a frightening, yet beautiful experience it must have been.
I wanted to depict the beauty of that sea into which he was falling, the beautiful blue and green shades of the turbulent water, seaweed, plant life, and other organisms around him before the great fish swallowed him!
I feel I have accomplished this feeling in my painting entitled: “Under the Sea.”
