Jonah…Out of the Deep
Art Medium: Fabric Collage with Stitching

Grace Wever – I am a fabric collage artist whose work is inspired by biblical poetry. Jonah, a shadowy figure of streaming seaweed filaments, is violently expelled from the “belly of Sheol” (Hebrew). The background fabric, used on the reverse, sets the mood with its fishnet patterns and undersea color gradients. Stitching, used as drawing, embellishes the image. The work includes hand-dyed cotton and metallic silk.
The Vine and Worm

Kenna Westerman – After reading Jonah, I realized how the vine and worm can remind me of my own stubbornness, wanting what I think is fair or wanting it done my way. When I walk along the trails and see twisted vines, I am reminded to examine my life to see where I was being stubborn that day and not listening to what God is wanting from me. Thankfully, God puts up with my childlessness and accepts my plea for forgiveness.
The Storm

Kenna Westerman – I chose to photograph a storm in the ocean. My life is like the small boat. I may be tossed around. I may lose my way. Sometimes I imagine God as the ocean and I can visualize God’s power. The power of the ocean may be at times choppy, calm, or full of fury. When I cry out, I can feel the power of God directing me to safety, letting me know whom I can depend on.
God Sent a Whale

Connelly Weeks – My piece is about God sending a whale to swallow up Jonah. I did this piece because I wanted to depict the power that God has over His creation and how He speaks to us through His creation.
An Answered Cry

Elizabeth Weber – Painting, for me, is a way to reconnect to the Spirit. I approach the canvas with a sense of reverence, asking to be an open channel for the Real Creator to come through. With this painting, I watched the entire book of Jonah unfold across the canvas, shifting from one moment in the book to the next. And when the Heavens opened up, answering a cry, the painting came to rest as a witness to that Divine Response.
Riches to Rags

Kristen Vaughan – This is the king of Nineveh repenting in sackcloth and ashes after Jonah finally obeyed God and preached to Nineveh. In the dull, dirty colors, the king is portrayed in contrast to the bright royal colors of how he used to live. He has been humbled and is distressed and sorrowful. The purple background emphasizes the king’s royalty compared to the sackcloth he is in now.
Journey to Nineveh

Alex Vandiver – Jonah is a small black figure who is finding his way to Nineveh. His footsteps are symbols of his leaving the belly of the whale. I painted the land gray to symbolize the whale also. The huge sun is representative of God’s strength and power and how Jonah finally sees that he can’t run away from God’s will.

Victor Valla – Jonah has been cast into the sea by his fellow travelers and is swallowed up- by the Great Fish. All of the main elements of the story are captured in this moment- the ship, the terrible storm God has sent, their discarded cargo, a helpless and doomed Jonah, the Great Fish, and even the clearing skies, which represent hope for those saved. Jonah knows some of what lies before him. He has yet to experience the worst of the ordeal- the three days and nights of nightmarish terror while living in the belly of such a Monster. That he would be ultimately saved to have a second chance to follow God’s directive is more than he or any of us would rightfully expect.

Cara Tyhurst – Jonah did not want to go to Nineveh, but he sacrificed himself into the dark sea trusting God would calm the waters. God sent a whale to swallow Jonah and for three days and three nights – represented by six ribs – he prayed. As the whale spit him out, its tail appeared as hands lifted in praise.

Colton Towles – The book of Jonah inspired me to draw this picture. I wanted the waves to tell the story of how God used Jonah to help save the people of Nineveh.

Taylor Thompson – The story of Jonah appealed to me as a vision of an old man rowing his boat in the middle of a sea trying to head to an unknown destination. The symbolism involved in my painting relates back to the story of Jonah as trying to illustrate Jonah’s desertion of God. The water symbolizes the rough path that Jonah decided to take and the sky represents the anger that God understood with Jonah’s decision.
Dove

Hannah Thomas – In this piece, I chose to portray Jonah. The name “Jonah” means “dove.” I wanted to emphasize the light coming through the dove. A dove in scripture also symbolizes the Holy Spirit. I hope that this painting conveys God’s love and care for all people even in their disobedience.

Cameron Tedder – My painting shows Jonah on the beach with the vine on his right. The gourd vine is from chapter 4, verse 6. “And the Lord God prepared a gourd and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief.” This shows God’s provision for us.

Sam Teague – I made a face using chalk pastels. I was inspired to portray the king’s reaction to Jonah’s warning.
