Nineveh I

Virginia Berg-Taylor – Nineveh I depicts the city of Nineveh before Jonah has delivered his message of doom. The dark colors represent the rampant evil in the city. The tears falling from the cross (which represents God) show God’s sorrow at the rampant evil in the city of Nineveh.

Julie Berglin – Jonah’s hand reaching for life, hopeful | Almighty God, Your will be done | Mysterious ways God intercedes | Fish, place of waiting, giant life | Glimpses of light, crimson red, presence, glory, judgment | Deepest, darkest places God exists | Acceptance, obedience | 120 thousand repent | Redemption, restoration | Jonah’s tree of rest? | Compassionless? | Self-righteous? | God intervenes, tree shrivels | Wind howling, heat scorching, Self-pity | Reflecting on our hopeless condition | What is life outside of God’s presence? | God of wind, God of sea, God of people | Complex Ruler, restrained power | God’s will be done
Within the Belly

Melissa Aguiar – I was inspired by the book of Jonah to show that you cannot hide from God (even inside the belly of a fish). The scripture teaches us that God wants us to celebrate the salvation of others and not to be resentful or jealous.

David Bell – The story of Jonah is filled with faith and belief in divine intervention. Cast into the ocean, he turns to God; trusting, praying, and he is saved. I tried to use the ebb and flow of forms and images to show Jonah’s inner conflicts, using bright colors not often associated with the ocean. The figure is dark and troubled, yet the forms around him are not threatening. The process in creating this painting was inspiring and challenging.

Joe Barnett – I love dreams and symbols and enjoy looking for their meanings. In my drawing/painting, “Jump,” I am trying to show how God sometimes asks us to jump in without knowing what is awaiting. We have to trust that God has a plan a plan for us like He did in Jonah’s life.

Nina Baker and Parilee Croft – Jonah talking to the Lord: “Oh, why to Nineveh did you relent? I did not want them to repent, and to spare their lives I was sent. I thrive under the vine that is bent over the head of my little tent. The worm the shade did end.” God replied: “This you did not tend. My people I will strongly defend.”
God’s Miracle

Mary Andersen – My impression shows the miracles of our Lord…because of Jonah…from the raging sea to the calmness of the sea. Few biblical recordings show the defiance of God as many times as Jonah. Sailors did not realize that Jonah was removing himself from the presence of the Lord. Once Jonah was cast overboard, the Lord calmed the sea…at which time the great fish swallowed Jonah.
Trouble with Directions

Deborah Allen – Modern day man is really no different than Jonah. Daily we choose to move in the opposite direction God has chosen for us. I began the piece by building a wood structure. The edges were carved and the surface manipulated to give the impression of age and a suggestion of history. Could this be a fossil rescued from the sea? A man leans against a tree feeling sorry for himself while another man runs blindly in the wrong direction. Will he fall into the abyss? A whale looms in the background and the tree is really a castor oil plant reminding us of Jonah’s decisions as well as God’s provisions.

Gary Alexander – Gardening has always been a passion of mine. The Morning Glory brings new life to each day and reminds me how fragile life can be. Here today and gone tomorrow. Jonah had more compassion for his vine than for the people of Nineveh just as I can have more concern for my own desires and passions.
