Joyce Hartmann – Jonah 2:10 – “And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.” Which is worse – being swallowed by a fish or being ejected by a fish? This painting uses texture, color, and line to convey the dramatic action of Jonah’s delivery from the fish.
Drowning in Deep Depths of Despair

Patty Harris – This represents the waters engulfing Jonah before he was swallowed by the fish. He was in the BLACK depths of disobedience and despair. Helpless distress is represented by the BLUE waters of hopelessness. Actually, God is present in the WHITE but seemingly not present to Jonah until he prays (PURPLE) to God. Notice that as Jonah prays (PURPLE), ”You listened to my cry, O Lord, my God,” that God (WHITE) is present and is side by side with Jonah in his time of need….as He is in my time of need today.
Rejecting the Call

Daniel Harp – I chose to paint the hand of Jonah pushing away the first few verses of Jonah. These verses are the ones where Jonah was told to go to Nineveh, but he did not. The messy background represents the city of Nineveh, because it was full of chaos. Also the burnt scripture represents how Jonah rejected it.
Messenger from the Deep

Lauren Hansen – “Messenger from the Deep” is a drawing that shows God’s messenger, the whale, passing on to Jonah a very important message. The storm has just subsided since the crew has thrown Jonah overboard. As the crew looks out to sea, they spot Jonah, and he is about to be swallowed by the whale.
Arise

Briahna Hansen – “Arise…” (Jonah 1:2a) … The image of a moving foot indicates action. God commanded Jonah to act, to “Arise.” I see Jonah as an unwilling missionary and have always wondered what would have been accomplished had he fully and completely arisen to God’s call. As Christians, each of us has the same call to “Arise,” thus, the blue jeans. “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace…” (Romans 10:15).

Brenda Hansen – There are many modern day Jonahs. My drawing depicts Jonah as a boy contemplating God’s awesome creation. The sign showing a crossroads of Nineveh and Tarshish represents the choices that Jonah had and also acts as a foreshadowing of the death that Jesus would later die as a penalty for our sins. Jonah’s story shows that, although sometimes clearly discernable, God’s path is not always the easiest, nor is it the most often chosen…
When My Soul Fainted

Grace Grubb – “When my soul fainted, I remembered the Lord” is a collage about doubting something and God stepping in to intervene. The image of the doves is symbolic of the Holy Spirit. Turtle Doves mate for life…and when we doubt our faith, the Holy Spirit reminds us that He is with us for life also.

Raouf Halaby – In childhood I became more observant of hands. Hands are used to greet, write, perform artistic feats, hold, assure, comfort, and console, and, when words fail us, our hands emote our deepest feelings, hopes and fears. Praying, Healing, Guiding, and Helping Hands have become metaphors. In the shaping and kneading of his character, Jonah’s reaching out in supplication epitomizes our faith in God.

Samantha Gregory – This picture portrays the seaside to which Jonah was delivered. It shows the sunrise and how the world is bringing a new day. The new day represents a new beginning, a fresh start, like the fresh start Jonah was given by God.

Dee Graves – Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly. “I cried out of my distress to the Lord and He heard me” (Jonah 2: 1-2). Even in our darkest hour, when we may be outside the will of God for our life, we can call to Him in our distress and He will hear us.

Dee Graves – After Jonah came out of the fish’s belly, God again called him to go to Nineveh. It was a new beginning for Jonah as God’s messenger (Dove).
A Great Wind

Matthew Gorham – In Jonah 1:4-5, the Lord sent a great wind into the sea that scared the mariners and made them cry out unto their gods. I wanted to create a painting that makes the viewer experience some of the anxiety and uneasiness that the mariners must have felt. I did this though my use of color and diagonal lines.

Michele Glover – “I worship the Lord, the God of Heaven, who made the sea and the land” Jonah 1:9. God often reveals His nature through nature. Jonah ran from God’s mission to Nineveh because of storms in his life. Every life is buffeted with storms and difficult decisions. Our choice to argue or submit is where our relationship with God is revealed. He longs to restore and redeem! Will you accept God’s mission for an unsaved world?
The Light in the Darkness

Jan Gartrell – My concept of the book of Jonah is abstract. I suggested the city of Nineveh. The dark shape below the city represents the wickedness of the Ninevites. The ship and fish are also suggested in line drawing. The dark shapes represent the days Jonah was inside the belly of the fish. The colors are deliberately chosen, with darks and lights representing the light and darkness that exists in Jonah, the
Ninevites, and us all.
Painting Outside the Fish

Jan Gartrell – I have expressed my concept of the book of Jonah through the simplicity of colors and shapes. Gold is a mysterious color with its luminosity, so I naturally make the circle of gold to represent God’s love and mercy for Jonah and us. In contrast, the large dark shapes represent Jonah’s days in the belly of the fish. The configurations of small shapes represent the city of Nineveh. The line drawings represent the ship’s many lines and mast. The blue is the suggestion of the sea. The red represents our rebellion towards God. The emerging images became my thoughts on the book of Jonah.
