Dixie Rogers – “In my distress I called upon the Lord, and He answered me.” Jonah 2:1-2
Having doubts about one’s self along with destructive emotions like anger can destroy a person. We must strive to be better individuals and pursue the talents that God has graciously given to us. Even at our lowest points in life, when all seems lost, God will show mercy and give strength.
Jonah repented for his disobedience and overcame his anger to become the most effective of all prophets, turning 120,000 people to God.

Jonah – Nineveh or Mosul, Iraq

Art Medium: Watercolor on Paper

Art Dimensions: .

Diane Ziemski – Jonah was always just a story about a big fish. After listening to David Itkin, it became much more. Then,
in doing research, I realized that Nineveh is where modern day Mosul, Iraq is located. Maybe we need to listen to what Jonah was saying then……..

A New Day

Art Medium: Acrylic

Rachel Young – The raging sea represents God’s displeasure with Jonah who was proud and thought he was above the wicked sins of Nineveh. The little girl represents the children of Nineveh. Jonah wanted their entire generation to be obliterated. However, because God is in control and merciful, He forced Jonah to go and many lives were saved. The people repented and their little ones did not have to suffer for the sins of their fathers.

All Washed Up

Ramona Wood – I am drawn to stories about people in unusual situations. Although Jonah’s experience of being swallowed by a fish was unique, the feeling of being “all washed up” is common to the human experience. I believe the moment of truth in life is what happens when people reach their lowest point.

Second Chances – Decision

Art Medium: Photograph

LeAnne Winters – Jonah, after he was spit out by the whale, realizes that he has been given a second chance at life itself, and to obey God’s call. We make many promises to God when we are facing the darkness, but when we are given a second chance, we can still go back and choose the darkness. Nineveh – our neighborhood, the inner city, the needy, the addicted, our family, or our children – all wait in the distance. What will we choose?

Jonah Hides

Jennifer Wilson – Ever since Adam used the fig leaf to cover himself after his disobedience, man has rebelled and hidden from God. Jonah tried to run from God’s command to preach His promise of redemption through repentance. As the Pharisees judged the adulteress woman, Jonah judged the Ninevites unworthy of mercy. However, God reaches for the lost in unholy places and unexpected ways fulfilling His desire to redeem mankind, ultimately, through the sacrifice of His Son.

Salvation

Kathryn Willis – In this piece, I chose to portray the verse Jonah 2:2, “In my distress I called to the Lord, and He answered me…I called for help and You listened to my cry.” I decided to put Jonah in the water reaching up for God and a ray of light beaming down, as the waves of the ocean toss around him.

The Eye of the Storm

Art Medium: Mixed Media

Linda Williams – The painting is inspired by the book of Jonah and Christ’s prophetic comparison of the Son of Man spending three days and three nights in the bowels of the earth (Matthew 12:40). You can see the eye of God observing. Jonah went down to Joppa, down to Tarshish, down into the hold of the ship and portrayed going down into the depths of the sea. The ship has three masts representing Jesus’ crucifixion with the empty mast representing Christ’s descent into the earth. The three ships at sea are a reminder of how our empty actions affect others. The scripture in Matthew and the book of Jonah tell us salvation is from God.

Grace

Jay Williams – “He had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction He had threatened.” Jonah 3:10 — The story that occasionally is overlooked in the book of Jonah is the story of God’s mercy on Nineveh. This story in essence is the purpose of Jonah’s adventure. Nineveh sinned, so God sent Jonah, His “hand,” to preach against Nineveh. Nineveh repented and reached up to God, who pulled them out of their wicked ways. God’s grace saves.

Jonah’s Prayer

Art Medium: Acrylic and Charcoal

Art Dimensions: .

Art Price: $NFS

Ann Williams – Jonah’s prayer within the belly of the fish, as recorded in Jonah 2, tells of his near drowning and rescue. Using the descriptive words of the passage to make marks creates the sense of Jonah’s hopelessness and his salvation at hand amidst the swelling seas. The imagery of Jonah’s reflective prayer in Chapter 2 inspired and directed the marks made over an initial image of a seaweed-bound figure and his savior. Colors were chosen to represent the sea and paint the spaces created by the over-lapping lines to add dimension. Viewers are challenged to find the figure within and contemplate God’s faithfulness to hear their cries as He did with Jonah’s prayer.

Brittney Williams – While God’s plan is always complete and perfect, we can choose not to follow it. When we again get on God’s path, He will patch and repair with grace and mercy. This is clearly seen in Jonah’s acceptance of his fate when denying God.

Katie Wilkinson – My painting is of Jonah’s face. In one eye, one sees Nineveh, and in the other, we see the ocean and the whale. These images symbolize the choices he had to make.

Three Days and Three Nights

Art Medium: Mixed Medium

Art Dimensions: .

Art Price: $NFS

Janet Cecil-Wilcox – I created the figures in graphite emerging from a forest. Jonah’s three days and three nights were used as a reference by Christ when He told His disciples that after three days and three nights, He would come to them again after His death. Jonah’s resurrection is symbolic of Christ’s resurrection. All of us are resurrected through our faith in God.

The Salvation of Jonah

Art Medium: Mixed Medium

Art Dimensions: .

Art Price: $NFS

Janet Cecil-Wilcox – The inspiration for my work is the layering of color, shapes and line. In Jonah, I have created the stages of his journey to do God’s will and save Nineveh. The three spherical shapes represent God’s intervention in Jonah’s faith. The green sphere is Jonah’s tomb. Here he listens to his inner voice and asks for forgiveness for running away from his fate. The radiating white light is God’s salvation and forgiveness, and the final circle is Jonah’s rebirth from his tomb. In this sphere, I have drawn Jonah in an embryonic state, his opportunity to spread God’s word.

Jonah

Susan Whiteland – Jonah’s story is a capsule version of God’s story with His people. God initiates relationship. Our position is not based on our merit but on God’s grace. That translates into compassion toward others not superiority. As Jonah discovers, God can use even a worm. We should shine with that light to a darkened world.
