Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden with Matisse and Me

Ellan McKenzie – God, our Creator, planned an environment for Adam and Eve that was filled with beauty – flowers, the song of birds, stones, trees, fish, animals – all for man’s enjoyment – and for man’s creative spirit to enjoy – all was intended to be pleasant to the sight and good for man’s continued existence as a part of His master plan of earthly creation. Through all the ages since, God has endowed man with the creative drive to make tangible that which is experienced in life – to conceive, to perfect, to communicate, via the senses, that which is intangible – but real.

Carla McGoldrick – I chose not to depict the familiar figures of Adam and Eve being forced from Eden. I feel this image, in its various forms, is etched into our collective subconscious. Instead, I pulled the focus back into the Garden itself. The viewer is witnessing the event from behind the Angel, and gazing into the distant unknown.

Carla McGoldrick – As straightforward as this subject is, I needed to add layers of interest. I wanted to portray a precise creation in Adam with a flowing, softer approach for Eve. I have treated Eve’s creation from the rib of Adam in a fairly standard manner. The remainder is open for interpretation by the viewer.
A Decision to be Made #1

Carla McGoldrick – I felt it was necessary to imprint humanity on the time surrounding Eve’s ill fated decision. Her contemplation and the viewer’s knowledge of the eventual consequence are the primary focus. I also selected items from our modern lives to further establish ability to connect emotionally with the subject.

Carla McGoldrick – This is a representation of images in my mind’s eye as I read Genesis 1:1 – 2:3. I have made distinct areas on the canvas to symbolize each of the seven days described in the Bible. Rocks, shells, glass and feathers are attached to the painting for an organic emphasis.

Doris Mapes – I think of a garden as a happy pretty place. My painting is dominantly yellow (a happy color) before adding the fruit tree and the snake.

Doris Mapes – Light is bright so I used gold paint for the rays of light that travel in all directions.
Pride Cometh Before the Fall

Sara Linzy – Pride—all started here. Even before the first bite of the fruit was taken, this sin of the heart signaled the fall of mankind. Satan’s lies and temptation moved Eve’s heart to selfish ambition and dissatisfaction, which resulted in her disobedience to God with no regard to the consequences. I wish I could place all the blame of the world’s turmoil on Eve’s shoulders. But truthfully, if I had been standing in her place, there’s a good chance that the outcome would have been the same. That same look of pride in her eyes can at times be seen in all of us if we would just look in the mirror.

Maria Liebeck – God cast a deep sleep on the man…Genesis 2:21 My inspiration is based on the poem, “Creation” by James Weldon Johnson, from his publication, “God’s Trombone: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse”, written in 1917. Johnson describes God, as he scoops up clay from the river bank and says, “I think I’ll make me a man”. He continues, “This great God (was there) like a mammy bending over her baby”. I chose that moment when God sang a lullaby as he put Adam to sleep. What a wonderful, loving God we have, who also “bends over each of us” and cares for us with great tenderness.

Christy Leonhardt – I have always been interested in drawing trees because their branches twist and turn in all directions, and they also bring beauty to this world. I found a simple way of drawing them with simple crooked lines a couple years back. When my teacher told us about this project, I knew that I wanted to do a picture with a tree, and what better way to represent Creation than the Tree of Life. I then combined it with the hand of God and colored leaves in a mixture of greens that stand out against the black background.

Pat Larsen – In Genesis 1:1 – 2:3 God created light, sky, water and land. He worked from the “big picture” toward the small. Once the land was made he began to fill it with the creatures of life. There is the obvious depiction of God’s creation, the beauty of nature as found where the sky, water, and trees glow in evening light. The second parallel has to do with the technique in which the artist works from generalized forms and gradually brings recognizable imagery into focus. Similar to Genesis 1:1 – 2:3, the underlying principle is that one works from the general toward the specific and the harmony comes from all forms occupying the same space.

Linda Larey – I painted this watercolor inspired by all creation, especially in awe of the fact that man is made with God as the model; that we are most like the creator –a self-portrait. We were made to fellowship with Him and to do His will. What a miracle! What a privilege!

Joanne Kunath – As I walked before sunrise down the trail lined with dense forest. Fearful doubts are presented in the darkness. But then rays of light slowly merge thru the trees and brightness surrounds me. Light gives me a peaceful security; a guidance that leads my path; courage to face a new day. As I created, “Let there be light”, I envisioned rays of yellow, reds and orange entering into the darkness: representing the power of our “Master’s Hand”. And He said, “That is good” While viewing this painting I hope that you will feel the power and beauty that only light can give us.

Joanne Kunath – One day at work my daughter experienced a severe pain in her head, fell to the floor & was hospitalized. The doctors sent her home on medication, with no definite diagnosis. She went from being an active mother of three & full time office manager to a bedridden, weak, confused individual. As I cared for the family, I felt helpless & angry not knowing what the future would bring. One night I got up praying for answers & started painting. I wanted the Masters Hand to come & care for me; to save my daughter; to lead & guide me. He gave me answers & hope as I created; peace filled my heart & mind. This painting gave Hope & Encouragement to our entire family.
