In the Beginning

Stephen Dalby – This drawing comes from Genesis 1:2, “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the surface of the deep.” I was inspired by this verse because it is amazing to me how God can take absolutely nothing and turn into something so beautiful and magnificent. When I read this verse, God revealed to me a picture of what He wanted me to draw. He is my inspiration.

Todd Crockett – This body of work evolved out a series named “Chaos”. “Chaos” focused on the time just before creation when all the puzzle pieces were there, just still without form or order.
The joy of art, as an artist, is being able to express on canvas emotion and feeling. The joy of art, as a viewer, is taking that which was expressed by the artist and translating those emotions and feelings into your own experience.
Hand of God

Catie Critz – My piece of art is a sculpture of the hand of God holding a little bird. I came up with the idea to do this sculpture because in the beginning God sculpted everything with His hands, from something as big as the world to something as small as a bird.
Genesis Etude

Tom Cox – Upon hearing of Mustard Tree Arts call for Genesis oriented work I sensed these Etudes had laid the necessary groundwork for painting a Genesis Etude. I found inspiration by both limiting my vision (primarily to the first three verses of Genesis, chapter 1), and expanding that vision to include the gospel of John’s proclamation of the word present “in the beginning”, therefore in creation (John 1:1). From this place I was able to work rather freely by expanding both my palette and the division of space in order to visually narrate the multi-layered aspects for the texts.
ADAMEVE

Tom Cox – The Genesis accounts of creation of the first man and woman are very rich in imagery and mystery. Adam made from dust of the ground, unique but alone; deep sleep; Eve, made from Adam; rib and bone; flesh of my flesh; and the imago Dei. With all these elements at work in my imagination I created a single figure expressing both masculine and feminine forms, but possessing certain incompleteness . . . Adam’s incompleteness with Eve as well as the incompleteness of all of creation without Eve. The figure shows a singular moment in the narrative, the “not yet” moment where Adam is unconscious (headless) as God mysteriously works from within and out of him.
The Promise of God Fulfilled

David E. Coulter – “And the Lord said to the serpent, because thou has done this . . . And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”
At the cross, the promise of God was fulfilled as it crushed Satan’s poison of sin in the sons of Adam by victory over death with an atonement for the sins of the whole world—a Savior that rose from the dead to give all who look upon Christ as their Savior, eternal life in Him.
Adam Was Made a Living Soul

David E. Coulter – Adam was made a living soul. Eve was created out of the side of Adam, bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh. Eve was deceived by Satan, and Adam did also eat of the forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve were driven from the garden and an angel guarded the gate with a flame of fire. By Adam’s sin, death came into the world and all men sin and fall short of the glory of God.
God cursed Satan and promised that a coming seed of woman would come into the world and destroy Satan’s works. Man is restored back to God through faith in the message of the cross where a risen Savior conquers Adam’s sin.
The Hope of the World
Art Medium: Oil

David E. Coulter – The first Adam was a living soul in the flesh. His bride was Eve, the mother of life in the flesh, who was taken from the side of the First Adam—Bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh.
The second Adam was a life giving Spirit who brought forth the church, His bride from His side. The promised seed, Jesus Christ who loved the Church and gave Himself for her in a blood atonement at the cross to wash her in the word (the gospel received by faith) to make her without wrinkle or spot, bone of His bone and flesh of His flesh, born in the Spirit washed in the blood.
The Weave of Temptation and Sin
Art Medium: Work on Canvas

Trish Corder – As I thought about this subject I became more and more aware of how the devil temps us with things that look inviting, as did the forbidden fruit to Adam and Eve. When we give in to that temptation sin weaves itself into our lives so that it becomes a prison that we ourselves cannot escape. The center of the painting is not woven, but all around the hands of Adam and Eve is a weave that is subtle (I hope), but hems them in. Satan, in the form of a serpent, wraps himself around them. The hands stand out in sharp contrast, white background that represents the light of God, who is the only hope of redemption.
Face on the Water
Art Medium: Work on Canvas

Trish Corder – My inspiration for this painting came from Genesis 1:2. “And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters”. Light just seems to move and dance and play on the surface of water reminding me that God is the great creator and is alive and moving in our lives and our world.
God’s Eyes

Dawn Coppola – “God’s Eyes”, the image and poem, represents God’s creation of the beginning, the first day and also how He surrounds and watches over us throughout each and every day. The original painting is acrylic on canvas.
I wrote the poem a few months after painting the painting. The poem speaks of a time before God began creating the world, and how black it was before He decided to allow light and blue skies and yellow daffodils, my favorite flower, and how nothing will ever be that black again.
Eve the Temptress

Donna Connelley – This is my artistic vision of a tempestuous, irresistible Eve. The colors used express enticement and movement. Watercolor allows the viewer to enjoy strong colors in almost three dimensions. The apple in the painting represents the fruit used to separate Adam from God. Eve’s smile and eyes express mystery. She was a source of temptation. This act of temptation grew from a desire for power and control. Hopefully this watercolor painting captures your intrigue in this timeless biblical passage.
The Choice

Nicole Cogan – This piece of art was inspired by one of my friends, Taylor. When I first heard about this art contest, two of my friends and I started thinking of what we could do. While we were talking, Taylor thought that it would be cool to have an apple with the reflection of Eve reaching for it with the serpent in the background. Later, I found out that Taylor wasn’t going to do the contest. I asked her if I could use her idea. I changed it a bit; however, I could not have done anything without the help of Jesus Christ.

Hannah Clardy – I wanted to paint something for my family’s mantle at home. As with all God’s creation, these irises have served as reminders to my family of our Creator.
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” Romans 1:20,
Consequences
Art Medium: mixed
Art Dimensions: .

Rachel Childers – I made this art work because I wanted to symbolize the consequences of Eve’s action. This art work is not ordinary. It has no serpent or apple in it. It has my personal touch of what I saw n the verses. My real inspiration was how much the tree actually affected the time line throughout history and how everything we do has consequences. Adam and Eve had one of the greatest consequences of all history. That is why I made this painting.
